St. Louis Rams select Michael Brockers in first round of 2012 draft – NFL News
A day before the National Football League (NFL) 2012 draft, the St. Louis Rams, who had earlier traded down their second overall pick with Washington Redskins to get sixth overall pick, made it clear that they were keeping their options open and could even
trade up or down their sixth pick or could also settle for it.
When the draft day came, Rams opted to trade down the pick and gave the sixth pick to Dallas Cowboys. In return, they got Cowboys’ 14th overall pick in the first round and another pick in second round. Rams now have a total of three picks in the
second round.
Apart from gaining more picks in the second round, Rams got another reason to cheer on the first day of the draft as they were able to pick Louisiana State University’s defensive tackle, Michael Brockers.
When Rams earlier traded their pick with Redskins, they expected to select Brockers as sixth overall pick, but when they found an opportunity to trade the pick with Cowboys, they thought of losing the opportunity to select Brockers.
Fortunately for them, Brockers was not selected by any other franchise and when it came to 14th pick, Rams did not hesitate in selecting Brockers.
While reflecting on the decision to trade down the pick, Rams’ head coach, Jeff Fisher, said that it was an offer from Dallas the Rams could not ignore.
However, he also expressed pleasure over the fact that Rams were still able to draft the player of their choice.
According to the details presented on the team's official website, Fisher said:
“We had Michael up there with number-six value and he was one of our considerations. We had other players up there with that number-six pick value, so when you have a number of players up there and the guy that you have interest in is no longer there, it
makes sense to go.”
Fisher added:
“We talked about our needs and to be able to get pick number forty-five from Dallas was a deal we couldn’t refuse. So now you wait and things start falling into place, and there was a run on defensive tackles and the only club we really had to wait on was
Arizona and Michael fell to us.”
