St. Louis Rams to interview Joey Clinkscales and George Paton for the vacant GM post – NFL News
After hiring a new head coach, St. Louis Rams is now shifting attention towards appointing a new general manager for the franchise.
In this regard, the management is going to interview New York Jets’ vice president of college scouting, Joey Clinkscales, and Minnesota Vikings’ director of player personnel, George Paton, on Monday, January 30, 2012, as reported by St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Clinkscales, 47, is serving New York Jets since the last 17 years.
After working as a regional and national scout, he was promoted to the post of vice president of college scouting four years ago.
Rams started a hunt to bring new personnel in its front office, following a dreadful National Football League (NFL) season after which, the then head coach, Steve Spagnuolo, and general manager, Billy Devaney, were fired.
Rams recently appointed former Tennessee Titans’ coach, Jeff Fisher, as its head coach, who also brought new defensive and offensive coordinators in the franchise.
Long before Fisher’s appointment, Clinkscales was considered for the vacant post of general manager. However, the appointment of a new GM was delayed as the management wanted to get done hiring new coaching staff first.
While underlining the criteria for the selection of new GM, Rams’ chief operating officer (COO), Kevin Demoff, said earlier that someone who could develop good chemistry with the coach would be the ideal candidate.
He commented after the firing of former personnel that:
“We are looking for someone dynamic who can bring in the right players.”
The COO added:
“I think we are looking for strong leader in personnel who has got a diverse background who can bring together diverse opinions and give us the best players. We sit here with the second pick in the NFL Draft coming up, we have a lot of salary cap flexibility
moving forward and someone is going to have a great opportunity to make good choices for the St. Louis Rams.”
Now that the coaches are selected, the appointment of a new GM is expected soon.
George Paton is the other candidate who will be interviewed by Rams.
He had spent time with Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins before joining hands with Minnesota Vikings where he is serving as the director of player personnel from last five years.
Meanwhile, different reports suggest that the Arizona director of player personnel, Steve Keim, who was also expected to visit the Rams’ facility, has delayed his arrival and now he will be interviewed later this week.
The rehabilitation process is going smoothly for Rams. The new head coach and his subordinates are selected and with the appointment of the new GM, the franchise will be ready to prepare for the upcoming NFL drafts.
