St Mirren midfielder determined to help club avoid drop

St Mirren midfielder Steven Thomson says that he is desperate to play his part in helping his club to steer clear of relegation from the Scottish Premier League.

The 32-year-old has been suffering from a torn calf muscle but has made a full recovery from his injury and is ready to make an impact for the Buddies after making his return in the 1-0 defeat to Celtic on Sunday 14 November.

The former Brighton player's appearance as a substitute marked the first time he played for the club in nine weeks, and Thomson is eager to put the injury behind him and help St Mirren achieve the victories they need to avoid the drop.

He told the Daily Record that: "I'm just hoping to stay injury free. I do go along to the games but I don't like being there as I get agitated sitting in the stand. But these things happen and you have to deal with it. When I first had the injury the diagnosis
was it might be a dead calf but when I ran on it, it was too sore and I went for a scan. I was told it was a grade two tear. I'd missed a few games but it was good getting on against Celtic."

Thomson added that he felt the narrow loss to Celtic, in which Gary Hooper scored the only goal of the game in injury time, proved that St Mirren are finally getting to grips with the SPL after a drastic squad overhaul.

He said that: "There have been new guys coming in, boys who haven't played in this league before, but they are starting to find their feet. Everyone had written us off but sometimes that can give you a focus to prove them wrong. We did well against Celtic.
Despite the defeat we can take a lot of positives from the performance."
