St. Rita loses to Glenbard West by 2-1 in State Championship quarter-final: Volleyball
St. Rita boys volleyball team was not successful in winning the state quarter-final on Friday against Glenbard West as they lost 1-2.
Despite giving tough competition to their rivals in the first set and winning the second, St. Rita could not seal the deal on the third and final set of the game. Therefore, the win that led Glenbard West into the state semi-finals was based on the following
final set scores of 25-21, 17-25 and 25-20.
Glenbard West has been able to improve their overall number of season wins with their recent victory to a figure of 33. These victories have been accomplished after suffering defeats that tally at seven. In contrast to this, St. Rita has been able to secure22
wins at the expense of incurring a total of 18 defeats in this season.
When the match had finally reached its close, St. Rita’s coach Kathleen Mixan had the following words of praise for her team: “(We played) with no fear, we played with pride and dignity, and that’s what I saw these last seven games. Those last four points
just got away from us. Building this program up in two years, I’m really proud of them. They stepped up.”
The first set of the match saw both St. Rita as well as Glenbard stay almost neck to neck for the most part. No team was letting the other take the lead for a long time. As the match reached the middle stages, the competition got more intense but no one
was sure where the tables would turn. It was only in the later stages of the opening set that Glenbard was able to take the lead that finally led them to win the set at 25-21.
St. Rita did not let the loss of the initial set get them down and were able to come out strong and take the lead early on in the second set. Rather than hitting when the iron was hot, Glenbard seemed to relax and made a few crucial errors that got St. Rita
going. As a result, Glenbard lost the second set at 17-15.
After learning their lesson, the third set of the game was bagged by Glenbard at 25-20.
The players that stood prominent in St. Rita’s lineup were Bobby Gallagher, Joe Biros, Joe Fashingbauer and Thomas McDermott. Gallagher was able to make the highest number of kills for his team by posting 17 of them. Biros helped by adding 10 kills of his
own. Fashingbauer and McDermott were more active in making assists. Fashingbauer was able to give St. Rita a winning chance by making 18 assists while McDermott helped in making 16 of them.
The most active on the Glenbard side were Ian Lawson and Alex Emanuel. Lawson led Glenbard by posting an impressive 23 kills for his team. Emmanuel kept the pressure on St. Rita by making 21 assists all through the match.
