St. Thomas Hurricane Season/Hotel question?

I am traveling to St. Thomas at the end of August this year. Would like for someone in "the know" or a local to let me know if this is going to be horrible trip. I read in several posts hurricane season is between Jun. and Nov. I have been to Asia during hurricane season but it was nothing!

Also, I hear great things about Marriotts Frenchmans Reef for a hotel stay. I would like something near a nice beach but not over $200.00 a night. Any suggestions?

  1. St. Thomas is very hit and miss. Obviously known of us can predict the weather...but to give you an idea of the situation. The five years I lived on STT in the 80s, I did not get so much as a strong wind...in the summer.

    One never knows...

But is it like rainy season in the Amazon ...no

Frenchmen Reef growing up was one of those premier hotels.. Others have since come along to rival it but it is nice.

And you will be hard press to find a bad beach on STT. But all the same...take the ferry to STJ for more seclusion.

  2. Hurricane season is June 1 to Nov 30th. The busiest tropical storm months are August, Sept and October. September being the worst month.

Right now there is a hurricane in Bermuda with rain and 60 mile winds. Even at that wind speed it is nasty.

Weather is unpredictable, if you go have a back up plan (travel insurance to cover your expenses) One thing about hurricanes, the weather people are very good about predicting hurricane land falls. As soon as they start to form anywhere in the Caribbean you will know in advance.

A nice clean resort with a wonderful beach is Secret Harbour Resort. SH is located on the east end of the island, close to wonderful restaurants and the Red Hook ferry to St John or the BVI.

You can get an Oceanview studio for $185 before taxes.

    Summer rate.

We were there in May and the snorkeling was excellent. They have a nice restaurant and a dive shop/gift shop on property.

    Good Luck and enjoy)

  3. You will only have trouble if there just happens to be a hurricane passing nearby while you are on your trip.  If there are no hurricanes nearby there will be little impact on your stay and the weather will be beautiful.  In the interest of protecting yourself however, I would ask your travel agent or whoever you booked the trip with about getting travel insurance.  If you are unable to travel due to a hurricane and do not have insurance, you may loose all the $$$ you paid for your trip.

I have visited both St Thomas and St John but never stayed overnight so I can't suggest any hotels.  That time of year you should be able to get a deal since many people are hesitant to travel during hurricane season.  One definate must do is Trunk Bay on St John.  Its an easy ferry ride from St thomas and one of my favorite beaches in the entire Caribbean.

    Have fun!
