Question:

St Thomas Transportation: Golf Cart, Car, or Bikes?

I'll be in St Thomas for a week later this month with a buddy of mine. I thought it'd be really cool to ride around all week in a golf cart... Know where I can rent one for a week? I know they can be had for $60/day near the cruises... any chance those guys would rent it to me for a week for $200? Do they run on gas... how far can they go before refueling/recharging?

The car option looks like $240/week for a compact or $330/week for a convertible.

And finally the bike option... How much would it cost to get 2 bikes for a week? We're both athletic and don't mind putting in the effort. Is biking feasible?

  1. I would not rent a golf cart on St Thomas even if they were available. Maybe just to get around a resort. Not on the streets

My recommendations for transportation would be car rental, buses or dollar taxis. Here is a link that hopefully will help you. The terrain in St Thomas is not that great for bikes. Hilly, mountainous and plenty of curves.  Check this link out

Good Luck and enjoy St Thomas)

  2. In shape or not, I'd never attempt St Thomas on a bike! The hills there are killer, and they're literally everywhere! We went down a hill the other day so steep I thought our car was going to go end over top! I'd really recommend the car option, though I have seen scooter rental places you could check out! Have a ball! I love St Thomas!

  3. Ouch, I've got nothing but bad news for you on these questions.

Sorry, you can't ride around the island in a golf cart.  The Bureau of Motor Vehicles doesn't recognize them as vehicles fit for normal traffic conditions.  I have yet to see a single golf cart outfitted with a license plate.  I wouldn't recommend them for the roads of St. Thomas anyway.  You'd find yourself puttering along traffic at a slow pace and those things don't have nearly enough power to take on our steepest hills.

You'd be better renting a scooter.  There's a place near the cruise ship dock in Havensight where you can rent them.

Cars are always a safe option.  You can find car rental agencies right next to the airport and cruise docks.  They can even arrange to deliver the car to where ever you are.

Biking is feasible and allowable in the USVI.  Just keep in mind that you must obey the same rules of the road that motorist do.  Also, you can't ride bikes on sidewalks and you have to stay on the extreme left of the roat at all times.  I don't know of anyone that rents bicycles but they are available for purchase from places like K-mart.
