St Trinians captured the Adoration Stakes under new jockey Joel Rosario at Del Mar
The six-year-old mare trained by Mike Mitchell, St Trinians was looking for a different prospect, possibly a change in rider and a break from Grade 1 and 2 races.
She got her wishes granted as she found a new rider in Joel Rosario, and $95,385 non graded Adoration Stakes, which she managed to ace under the new jockey with a cutback in distance of 1 mile.
St Trinians has finished fourth in four straight Grade 1 and 2 races, and she was coming of a fourth place finish in the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch at Del Mar on synthetic surface under jockey C Sutherland on 6 August, 2011.
St Trinians usually runs over a distance ranging from 1 1/16 miles to 1 ¼ miles, but the cutback in distance suited the older mare perfectly as she romped past her opponents to win the 1 mile event.
The favourtie in the field of seven runners, St Trinians, started off slow from the outset and on the final turn, she was wayward.
However, in the final quarter mile she showed that she has enough left in the tank, and under strong urging from jockey Joel Rosario, St Trinian picked up the pace and she darted from sixth position to defeat the leader, Downhill Diva, by half a length.
St Trinians under jockey Joel Rosario went on to complete her 1 mile assignment in 1 minute and 35.99 seconds.
Victoryasecret another head back fell off to finish third in the race.
Winless this year, St Trinians benefitted from a rare win, and she was coming off an easier spot.
She got disqualified in the Grade 2 Milady Handicap at Hollywood Park under J Talamo on 21 May, 2011.
Since then she has looked for a winner in 3 starts, winning in the third.
Joel Rosario was the fourth replacement jockey aboard St Trinians in her last four starts, and trainer Mike Mitchell was pleased with the performance saying, "that’s how you ride her".
St Trinians have been up against top class fillies, the likes of Ultra Bend and Zazu, but it was good to take her to the lighter side of racing and getting a much needed winner out of it.
