Stab in the back, Will it immobilize?

Question

So say an attacker comes in with a gun, and another person has a chance to sneak up and take 1-2 stabs into the back of the attacker, would that be sufficient to mobilize the attacker from retaliating? If not, Is there a way you could stab them to keep them from turning around and shooting you?

only if you stab them in the spine, but that might not always work

kick them in the balls, wack them on the head with a frying pan.  Stab them in the spine and you might get a murder charge lol
