I'm 17 and i am really thinking about getting a job as a stable hand. I have been around/worked/trained and ridden horses for about 6 yrs now. I can walk, trot, canter, and gallop easily. I also barrel race and go on alot of trail rides. Oh and i have some experience with foals. I am used to feeding/grooming horses everyday. How would i go about getting a stable hand job? Do you think i'm experianced enough? What do i say when i ask for the job?

  1. Go to your local barns ask if they have a job opening for a 17 year old that has been horseback riding for the past 6+ years and see wat they sayy

  2. I was going to warn you about putting hand and job in that order in your question title, but I guess Curtis already picked up on that...

It would be much easier to get the job in exchange for lessons or boarding, since it doesn't cost the farm any money.  I think you sound experienced enough, but are you also reliable?  If you don't have a local horse advertiser to look for help wanted ads in, you could put up an ad at the tack or feed store, or just start calling around.  I find that the best source of info is my farrier.  He got me a job once with a top level dressage trainer.  He spends all day going farm to farm, and talking to people so he knows everything.

  3. I would just make some posters and post them at the bulletin boards of local barns. You won't necessarily be riding the horses much, if at all, but the experience is worth it. On the poster, I'd include:

    --Name

    --Age

    --Phone number

    --E-mail

    --Skills/experience

    --Available hours

I will however say that it's a GREAT job to get around the horses. I'm 17 as well and am my barn's yard manager, and it's the most rewarding job I could imagine! I get first-hand experience with the horses, learn all the tricks of the trade, and get to bond with the horses...I haven't been through the job search myself though, because my trainer offered the job when I was old enough, but I've seen people use the poster ads, and it seems to work...Maybe also send an e-mail to local barns stating that you're available if they are looking for a hand.

Good luck! And I hope it helps!

  4. Oh ya, I think your experienced enough. Barns are can never have enough help, and you should be able to get a job fairly easily.  Call a barn and ask if you can apply for a job, ask if you can have a tour of the place to see what it's like.  If they ask what experience you have had with horses (they probably will), just be honest and say what you have done.  Reading what you put down here, you have more than enough experience.  Hope this helped!

  5. Have you thought of asking at your local tack shop, they have lots of good contacts.

Alternatively you could try riding/racing stables in your area. Or do a search through the breeding society to see what studs are in your are.

These types of jobs are often advertised in horse magazines.

Have you decided what field you'd like to learn more about, ie barrel racing. Then find out who is the best in your area and see if you could do some work for them. That way you'll learn as you go and be more at ease if it's something you're interested in.

  6. tell them you will give them a stable hand job!!!!!!!!!!! LOL! sorry. you should be fine.

  7. well ur definately qualified. you just tell them wat they want to kno and u should be fine.
