Question:

Stack sizes, your image, and monster draws in holdem?

Ok first of all, its nice to ask a question again!

I am refering monster draws as flush+ pair, oesfd, gut shot straight flush draw, and 2 overcards + flush.

Thats say you raised preflop on the button in a HU match. Oppenent calls. You flop a monster draw. He checks, you bet 5bb, he c/r to 14 bb.

How does stack sizes + pot size correlate to your decision?

Say you had 140 bb effective stacks BEFORE this hand started. Would your decision be different if you had 100bb, or 200bb?

How does your image correleate to your decision??? How does your oppenents image correlate to the decison?

  1. In almost every case, I'm reraising to somewhere around 45bb.  My main purpose is to get chips in the pot.  Stack sizes are irrelevant, unless mine or his is small enough to warrant an all-in now instead of later.

The only exception I can see is based on my table image.  If I have a very tight image, I'll actually make more by playing this hand safe.  A reraise will just chase him off, so I may as well call instead, see the turn, and then make my decisions based on 4 community cards.  Although there's a chance I can lose with this strategy, winning 14BB with a hand this powerful's not good enough and the only way to make more money is to let the hand develop.

  2. Stack size and image have to go into every decision.  If you're known as someone who chases draws or bets when you don't have a decent hand, you're going to get called.

If I don't have enough to over bet the pot and scare someone away, there's no point in trying it, and it's never a good idea to commit all or most of your chips on a draw, unless of course you have a pair of As or Ks along with it.

Of course, if you have an open ended straight flush draw with 2 live over cards on the flop, you are a 67% favorite to win, assuming all of your outs are live.

  3. Definitely post a question like this at pokergob.com

Yes my decision is based a lot on chip stack.  If I believe by raising here again I could get tem to fold, I would consider coming over the top.  With a monster draw heads up, if my opponent has less chips than me, I would consider taking a shot at busting them here.  It may also cause tem to fold and I would be happy with that too.  I think chip stack is probably one of the most important ingredients to playing draws against opponents.  Obviously if their c/r causes them to feel pot committed ad I am not willing to rish a lot on a monster draw, I may call and if I hit the draw put out a huge bet.

  4. really, with the strength of my hand especially heads-up, the stack sizes and the pot size have very little effect over the play of my hand...those hands are so strong and you have so many potential outs that they are worth playing for a lot of money almost no matter how deep you are playing, and especially so if you are shorter-stacked...now if you are really deep then a hand like the 2 overs and flush draw, where you can't be totally sure that the overs are really outs, has much less value, but otherwise the number of virtually guaranteed outs is too large not to want to play a sizeable pot

my image doesn't really correspond to my decision either, because with these types of hands, unlike the vast majority of others in cash games, there is no desired result...if he plays with me, i will often be the favorite and sometimes a slight dog in a big pot, so i rate to win money from the hand against his range unless it is extremely tight...if he folds, then i win a nice chunk right there, and it won't matter either way

my opponent's image does have some correlation, however...as i said before, if we are playing an opponent who is not going to go nuts here, we may want to consider slowing down on a hand where our outs aren't close to guaranteed, the specific example being 2 overs+ a flush draw...however, you have to be willing also to put pressure on this type of opponent, and a big semi-bluff is worth the shot especially since even if he plays you will have plenty of outs
