Stacy Lewis: From scoliosis-hit child to Rolex Player of the Year
When Stacy Lewis had been battling scoliosis more than a decade back, no one would have thought that she had the ability to hold a golf club, let alone become the Best Player of the Year.
Over16 years on, Lewis stands taller than most of her peers in professional golf as she fought back spinal curvature that caused her to strap a back brace, and set foot on the golf course
to begin her career.
Lewis was diagnosed with the debilitating back problem at the age of 11.
The American star is in the headlines these days, having capped off the 2012 LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) season as the best player.
Lewis has won the prestigious Rolex Player of the Year 2012 thanks in large to her 16 top-10 finishes that also include four LPGA titles.
Quite understandably, the accolade has brought back old memories.
The LPGA Tour recently caught up with Lewis and asked what it has been like to struggle through the years and become the most influential golfer in women’s golf.
"I just think back to 10 years ago when I remember sitting in a doctor's office and him telling me that I was going to have to have back surgery," said Lewis who turned professional in 2008
and now she is regarded as the most accomplished American female golfer.
Lewis admitted that the when she had been suffering the physical problem during her early teens, she had been as wrecked as any other person, and had never even thought about starting her
golfing career.
“That was the time that, I mean, I thought I would never play golf again. Now 10 years later I'm here winning Player of the Year".
The road to success has certainly been rockier than most of her fans and admirers think, but Lewis is keen to point out that she picked up a club right after she was free from her back brace.
“I think the reason that I played golf, that was when I could get out of my brace. I think I did the two sports growing up that when you got out of the brace, that's why I could get out of
the brace,” Lewis shared.
