Stacy Lewis bounces back in the final round of Wegmans LPGA Championship 2012, as she finishes tied for second spot
American Stacy Lewis displayed a stellar performance in the final round of the Wegmans LPGA Championship 2012, at Locust Hill Country Club, as she finished tied for the 2nd position after posting a 70.
Lewis got off to a lacklustre start on the opening day, but came back in full force in the last two rounds against battle-hardened rivals.
The American star was standing tied for the 17th position at the end of the opening round, as she posted a 72. In the second round, the golfing sensation maintained her score, but improved her position to tie-12.
In the last two rounds, Lewis picked up pace, posting a 70 each. She played a balanced game in the final round, as she drained one birdie on the front nine.
On the back nine, she seemed to falter a little, as she could not judge the first two holes and scored bogeys. She offset the bogeys by shooting two back-to-back birdies.
Analysts said that the American prodigy was among the hot favourites for the coveted title, as she has been playing well in the current season.   They pointed out that big names like the current world number one Yani Tseng finished poor, but Lewis was one
of the few top-ranked contenders who lived up to the expectations of their fans.
Speaking to the media at the end of the tournament, Lewis said that she is extremely happy to finish strong. She said that she came close to recording the second straight victory after she hoisted the title at the ShopRite LPGA Classic.
The 27-year-old golfer said that she played well throughout the final day, but had to make an all-out effort on the front nine. She pointed out that she came close to shooting a bogey on some of the holes on the front nine, however, sensible strokes helped
her avoid making big lapses.
“I only hit one fairway on the front 9. The front was a bit of a struggle, and I made a lot of really good pars. I made two bad bogeys on 10 and 11. That really kind of took me out of it,” Lewis said.
“I was proud, I birdied 3 of the last 8, so I was proud of the way I hung in there and made some putts at the end. It's fun being in contention and having a chance to win, and Shanshan went out there and shot a great round and that's the way you want it
to be”.
