Stacy Lewis claims victory at ShopRite LPGA Classic
American Stacy Lewis, who won the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic in April, grabbed yet another victory this season at the prestigious ShopRite LPGA Classic, after she posted a 71.
The tournament was played at the Seaview, Dolce Resort Course, New Jersey, with a strong field featuring battle-hardened LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) stars such as the current world number one
Yani Tseng, world number five Suzzan Pettersen, Ai Miyazato and Amy Yang among others.
Lewis was not ranked among the hot favourites for the title, despite showing an amazing performance in the 2012 season. However, the American proved all her critics wrong and added another professional triumph
to her profile.
Most of the big names were sidelined, but lesser-known players proved their worth. Katherine Hull of Australia grabbed the second spot, beating most of the hot favourites.
She kicked off the final round in an impressive style, as she drained two straight birdies on the par-5 3rd and par-4 4th hole. She then parred the next two holes and shot another two
birdies on the 7th and 8th hole.
Although she performed well on the front nine, three bogeys and double bogey seemed to take a toll on her overall performance. However, Lewis still managed to grab a victory.
Her performance in the second round was the best, as she shot a 65. She posted 8 birdies and a double bogey.
Analysts said that Lewis has maintained her momentum in the tournament, as she was already brimming with confidence following her victory at the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic.
Most important of all, the American prodigy displayed such a good performance in the wake of her recovery from a debilitating back injury. She had to undergo surgery to put her feet back on the course.
Speaking of the victory, Lewis said that she cannot believe that she beat big stars. She recounted the days when she had to battle severe pain and undergo treatment.
The 27-year-old star said that she could not even think of golf during that awful time in her professional life.
"I’m speechless,” she said. “To go from back surgery where I couldn’t even sit up by myself to now playing golf, having fun with it, playing with the best players in the world and being one of them? It doesn’t
get any better than that”.
