Stacy Lewis eclipses popularity of many Asian stars
American Stacy Lewis, who is set to tee off the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2012 on Thursday, may not belong to an Asian country, but she eclipses the popularity of many local players thanks
to a stellar profile and stature.
Lewis is going to face a competitive line-up packed with formidable Asian stars like current world number one Yani Tseng, Na Yeon Choi who is the defending champion of the tournament, Jiyai
Shin, Shanshan Feng, Sun Young Yoo, I.K. Kim and Ai Miyazato.
Lewis, being the strongest American contender in the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia roster, is expected to capitalise on a massive crowd support—as the media has already cast enough limelight on
the world number two.
With some local sports magazines having placed Lewis among the likely star performers at the Kuala Lumpur this week, Malaysian spectators are also preparing to give a rousing reception to
her, expecting a good performance.
“It's nice to be ranked as one of the favorites, I guess, but you've also got a target on your back. I played really well this year and just been really consistent,” Lewis said during her
pre-tournament interview at Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.
“I think that's been the best part for me. Coming off a win, I was glad to have a couple weeks off. But I feel really relaxed and ready to go for these next couple weeks in Asia,” added
the American who has racked up four pro titles on the LPGA Tour, with the three in the 2012 season alone.
Sharing her thoughts about the impending battle, Lewis said that she is happy to see herself as one of the strongest contenders in Malaysia, and she is sure her past performance is going to
help her shine this time too.
Lewis has recently come out as the only American player that golf-crazy fans love to put their trust in, given her fiery performance throughout the 2012 season.
Observers said that Malaysian fans will root for Asian contenders for obvious reasons, but a strong American line-up comprising big names like Angela Stanford, Brittany Lang, Vicky Hurst,
Paula Creamer, Lexi Thompson and Cristie Kerr can do wonders.
