Stacy Lewis falters in first round at Safeway Classic 2012
American Stacy Lewis carded a 73 in the first round of Safeway Classic 2012 to tie for the 66th spot on the leaderboard.
Lewis kicked off the Safeway Classic 2012 at Pumpkin Ridge’s Ghost Creek Course in grand style, but failed to grab the spectators’ attention because she made several mistakes taking a toll on her overall position
on the leaderboard.
Analysts said that the American star is among the hot favourite contenders for the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) title, and recording a good finish is very crucial for her.
Lewis has been in a tough battle against Taiwanese Yani Tseng who stands firm at the number one position in the Women’s World Golf Rankings. However, Tseng has been faltering and appears unable to perform well
as she recorded several woeful finishes in the current season.
Although the Taiwanese star has won three titles in the current season, missing the cut in some of the recent tournaments has taken a serious toll on her credibility, and Lewis, who ranks second in world ranking,
is eyeing the top spot.
So far, Lewis has been able to prove her mettle, which shows that the LPGA titan is keen to topple Tseng from her position and bring America back in the spotlight once again.
Her performance in the Safeway Classic is under intense scrutiny by American fans, and it remains to be seen how she fares against rivals in the next three rounds.
Starting on the 10th hole, Lewis recorded one birdie and one double bogey in the opening round. She parred 10th to 17th hole in a row and messed up her score on the 18th
by shooting a double bogey.
Lewis tried to regain her momentum on the seventh hole as she carded her lone birdie.
Commentators said the American star’s performance in the opening round is not commendable, but she has what it takes to rattle rivals.
No matter how good she performs at the current tournament, Lewis’s biggest goal is to overtake Tseng.
"You can really make a move there. Yani won so many times last year (seven). It would take a year like Yani had last year to catch her,” she shared while speaking to the media just a few hours before the Safeway
Classic 2012.
“I know I'm getting closer, but she hasn't been in a slump for a long time".
