Stacy Lewis finishes outside top 20 at CME Group Titleholders 2012
American Stacy Lewis knew what it would take her to win her fifth LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) at the CME Group Titleholders 2012, but she could not do her best and ended up outside the top 20.
Lewis carded an overall score of 288 to finish tied for the 29th position along with six other contenders.
Lewis, who was considered as the most favourite contender for the CME Group Titleholders, held in Florida, got off to a slow start as she posted a 70 in the first round.
The American star looked like she was not at her most dangerous, because she missed several good opportunities for birdies early in the tournament.
As it proved once again, a South Korean player was able to push every rival out of contention, winning the season-ending tournament.
Na Yeon Choi, one of the rising stars from South Korea, once again grabbed the headlines as she won the CME Group Titleholders after she carded an overall 274 to win the final tournament of the 2012 LPGA season.
Although it was not a messy game completely dominated by flaws, Lewis failed to capitalise on her vast experience of the local courses. Moreover, she could not make scores on some of the easiest holes as well.
As smooth as it might have been to look at her game, Lewis had enough chances to make birdies but did not take them—especially in the final round that saw her register five bogeys.
This week, Brittany Lincicome was the only player from America who gave a tough time to a strong Asian lineup. Lincicome displayed a balanced performance in all four rounds, firing an overall score of 277 to take the third position on the leaderboard.
Despite a below-average performance in Florida, Lewis remained in the spotlight throughout last week, thanks largely to her becoming the Best Player of the Year.
Choi, on the other hand, was confident that she will keep the momentum going in the next season as well.
Speaking to the media at the end of the final round on Sunday, the South Korean star said that she is happy to cap off the season by winning the last tournament.
