Stacy Lewis racks up second LPGA victory of the season at Crossings Course
Stacy Lewis, who maintained her lead in the second and third round of the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic, shot a superb 69 on the final day, at Crossings Course, grabbing the coveted title.
The tournament played at Magnolia Grove's Crossings Course turned into a nerve-racking battle between Lewis and the young star Lexi Thompson, when the latter improved her position after shooting a series of birdies on the final day.
Thompson came close to winning the title, as she avoided making bogeys in the fourth round. The young prodigy posted a stunning 65 to jump from a tie-6 to the second spot on the leaderboard.
Lewis, thanks to the second triumph of the 2012 season, walked away with a whopping $187,500 prize. The American golfer racked up her first major title at the Kraft Nabisco Championship 2011.
Thrilled by the victory, Lewis said that she could not believe when she finally beat her nearest rival by one stroke.
She said that she has gained the much-needed confidence after what she did at Crossings Course, and will try to keep the momentum going in the upcoming tournament.
After posting a solid 67 in the third round on Saturday, Lewis had said that she would go into the next round with a winning spirit.
She stated, "Anytime you win whatever, whether it's a pro event, an amateur event, whatever, a win is a win and it's a really great feeling”.
"My goal every week is just to get myself in contention for Sunday and give myself a chance to win, and I did that, so now I'm going to go out there and have fun tomorrow," she had said at the end of the third day.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, the 27-year-old star said, "I'm getting more comfortable in this situation. I think that's a lot of it, and it's definitely been coming. I lost in a playoff in Australia, so I knew I was due".
Thompson, who was quite excited after putting up a tough fight against the major winner, said that she is not disappointed after missing a chance to win.
She said that grabbing the second spot on the leaderboard is a major achievement for her.
Thompson played surprisingly well in the last edition of the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic, as she came close to inflicting a defeat on Maria Hjorth, who eventually won the event after posting a five-under 67.
