Stacy Lewis rises to 3rd spot in the world rankings
American Stacy Lewis, who won the ShopRite LPGA Classic 2012 in an impressive style, has surged to the third spot in the Women’s World Golf Rankings.
Lewis was standing at the 7th place before winning the ShopRite LPGA Classic, and now with a gigantic leap in her position, she has ranked herself among the big names like the current world number one Yani Tseng and Suzann Pettersen.
Pettersen, who stood at the third spot before Lewis toppled her, is facing a rough time, as she has not been able to record a victory since August 2011, when she won the Safeway Classic in the playoffs.
According to the latest rankings, Tseng has maintained her upper hand over her rivals, while Na Yeon Choi also stands firm at the second spot. Moreover, Cristie Kerr of the United States has slumped to the 7th from the 5th place.
In addition to Lewis, Japanese Mika Miyazato has proved her worth recently, as she has surged 7 spots to stand at the 29th place.
Analysts said that having a considerable jump has boosted Lewis’s confidence. On the other hand, the American star herself has expressed her desire to grab the top spot.
Golf commentators said that Lewis has what it takes to beat big names like Yani Tseng and Choi, but she has a long way to go.
They said that the golfing sensation lacks strength needed to keep her cool on the course. Although she displayed a flawless performance in the ShopRite LPGA Classic, she still made careless mistakes on some holes, which could have been avoided.
The Wegmans LPGA Championship is far more difficult than the ShopRite Classic, as it is one of the four major championships.
Analysts said the top-ranked Tseng may pose a serious challenge to Lewis, as she is defending her title.
Speaking to the media about how she is going to fare against rivals, the Taiwanese star said that she knows how to take on strong contenders, but she will keeper her eyes on the leaderboard scores.
Tseng has racked up two titles at the LPGA Championship — a feat that has helped her eclipse the popularity of most of the contenders in the roster.
