Stacy Lewis romps to victory at Navistar LPGA Classic 2012
American Stacy Lewis won the Navistar LPGA Classic 2012 in resounding fashion after she outplayed the defending champion Lexi Thompson by two strokes.
Lewis got off to a firm start at the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournament at Prattville, Alabama, United States, as she posted a 66 in the opening round.
Thanks to the fresh victory at Alabama, the American star has retaken the second spot in the Women’s World Golf Rankings. Whereas, before this event, South Korean Na Yeon Choi had knocked Lewis off the second
position after she displayed a solid performance at the Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012, held at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, United Kingdom.
Lewis, who made a promising start in the 2012 season as she managed to clinch titles at Mobile Bay LPGA Classic 2012 in April and ShopRite LPGA Classic in June, was simply irresistible from tee to green throughout
the four rounds at Prattville.
The third and fourth round saw the world number two make perfect strokes on almost all the holes, ramping up pressure on her nearest rivals.
Thompson, who was the hot favourite for the tournament as she won the last edition in grand style, was lucky enough to make a solid start. Having scored a massive 63 in the opening round, the LPGA phenom maintained
her lead in the first two rounds.
However, a 74 in the third round came as a blow to Thompson’s overall score on the leaderboard, causing Lewis to surge ahead in the final two rounds.
Lewis carded a 65 and 69 in the third and fourth round respectively.
Sharing her thoughts at the end of the tournament, the LPGA titan said she is pretty thrilled after winning her third victory of the current season. She said that she did not face difficulty beating some of
the best players in women’s golf.
“It's unbelievable. I mean, winning never gets easier. I think it might have looked easy out there but it was hard. Every shot was stressful, and I know on this golf course with one swing
you can make a double pretty easy,” Lewis said.
“I had some adrenaline going there at the end. I played great today, I just got off to kind of a rough start but kind of righted the ship at the middle of the round and just played really solid coming in”.
