Stacy Lewis says she is impressed with Lydia Ko's "demeanour"
American Stacy Lewis said that she is heavily impressed by amateur Lydia Ko because of her first Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) victory in Canada.
Lewis was among the players who doused 15-year-old Ko with water at the end of CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012, appreciating her for her maiden LPGA victory.
Speaking to the media at the end of the prestigious tournament at the Vancouver Golf Club, Lewis said that she has to admit that Ko dominated the match right from the start to the end, as she scored well in all the four rounds.
She said that she herself could not do her best this time, but she took keen interest in watching young Ko, who belongs to New Zealand, make perfect putts on the course, bagging appreciation from the Canadian spectators.
Lewis got off to a lacklustre start and missed several good chances to make a comeback in the match. She, however, performed well in the third round as she posted a 66 in a bid to improve her position on the leaderboard.
She carded an overall score of 281, finishing tied for the sixth position on the leaderboard.
Commentators said that unlike Lewis, most of the top-ranked LPGA contenders finished outside the top 10, which payers like Lydia Ko and Chella Choi fully capitalised on.
However, most of the players who ranked among favourites to win the CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012, heaped praise on Ko saying they forgot their grim performance after watching such a good performance from a 15-year-old amateur.
Lewis said that despite failing to do her best at Vancouver, she watched Ko play the whole time, which brought back old memories.
“I mean I was most impressed with just her demeanor. I mean you would have never known that it was the final round of an LPGA event. She played like she had been there before,” Lewis said.
“It was an impressive round for an LPGA pro, let alone a 14-year-old. So I was really impressed. She held it together out there and I was just trying to talk to her at the end, ask her what she's doing next week and kind of keep her distracted a little bit”.
