First round of matches of the 2011/2012 French Ligue 1 produced many goals, much to the delight of the fans. Newly-promoted Dijon FCO faced Rennes on August 7, 2011, at Stade Gaston http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gerard-c14664. Looking for an upset, the Burgundy club were devastated as Rennes
proved too hot to handle.
The home team went with a 4-4-2 formation with Gregory Thil and Brice Jovial as the two strikers and Benjamin Corgnet in the centre midfield, whereas Frederic Antonetti went with a more defensive approach of 4-2-3-1. Victor Montano was deployed as the lone
striker, Abdoulrazak Boukari on the Left wing, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jonathan-Pitroipa-c19052 on the right and Julien Feret in the centre.
Dijon were determined to get an early lead as Benjamin Corgnet’s cross found an opening in the 7th minute. Brice Jovial header was deemed off-side even though TV replays clearly showed otherwise. Just ten minutes, another move from the right opened
the defence of Rennes as Gregory Thil goal was judged offside.
With Rennes dominating possession, it was about time Les Rouges et Noirs stamped their authority on the pitch. A penalty was awarded to Rennes after Victor Montano was brought down by Steven Paulle. Julien Feret stepped up to take the penalty but to no avail,
as his shot sailed over the bar, much to the disappointment of the Rennais faithful.
The first goal didn’t come until the 34th minute as Rennes found themselves in a ‘3 vs. 2’ situation. Victor Montano ended up scoring an easy goal assisted by Abdoulrazak Boukari. Two minutes later, Julien Feret was able to redeem himself as a

Soon after, Dijon pulled one back after Gregory’s pass was headed in by Brice Jovial.
Patrice Carteron, Dijon coach entered the second half with a sense of revenge as he was eager to equalise. In the 50th minute, Abdoulrazak took advantage of some sloppy defending from Dijon and scored Rennes’ third goal. Dijon showed some signs
of revival as they were awarded a penalty in the 53rdminute. Gregory’s shot hit the post as Dijon failed to make use of the opportunity.
The visitors were able to further extend their lead when Mangane’s header found the net, taking the score line to 4-1. Any momentum showed in the first half by the home team was crushed by the visitors.
The newcomers were outclassed by Tettey’s fancy dribbling to score Rennes’ fifth, taking them to the top of the table in the first week of 2011/2012 Ligue 1 Championelle. Dijon will be extremely disappointed as this was their biggest ever defeat at home.
Carteron will find it difficult to lift the morale of his boys after such a crushing defeat. He will have to reorganize the team and learn from their mistakes as they will be facing much tougher opponents than Rennes.
With this win, Stade Rennais have edged past Montpellier Herault SC and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Toulouse-FC-c40751 on the same day.
