Stade Rennais denied top spot after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang strike – Ligue 1 news
A goal by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was enough to earn AS Saint-Etienne a 1-1 draw with high-flying Stade Rennais in Week 8 of the 2011/2012 Ligue 1 Championelle.
The young striker scored the equaliser in the second half which earned Les Verts a well deserved draw against Stade Rennais who have been in rich vein of form of late.
Stade de la Route de Lorient saw Rennais searching for a win that would bring them level on points with Paris Saint-Germain, Lyon and Toulouse. Furthermore, following a 6-2 hammering of Sochaux in Week 7, confidence was high and Galtier’s men looked in control
when Moroccan international http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Youssouf-Hadji-c37599 gave the home side a well-deserved lead in the fourth minute of the game.
This was his second goal for his new side which came from close range after goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier failed to collect a long range shot from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Burkina-Faso-c2862 winger deserved a lot of credit for the goal as he cut through the ASSE defence
and exchanged passes with Julien Feret before unleashing a powerful shot that Ruffier was unable to hold on to.
However, the goal did not force ASSE on the back foot. Eleven minutes after the start of the second period, Aubameyang scored his third goal of the season. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabien-Lemoine-c13141, a former Rennais employee, provided a delightful cross from the left flank which was
met by a powerful header from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gabon-c2902 international Aubameyang.
The goal was all the more important for Les Verts who had not scored against Rennais at home since December 2005.
The second-half striker now means that Frederic Antonetti’s men are in fifth place in the Ligue 1 standings and are two points behind the three leaders. Saint-Etienne on the other hand would be very happy with a draw but haven’t won in the last six league
outings. However, Galtier must be pleased by the character shown by his charges who did well to get back into the game after conceding so early.
Les Verts did start the game brightly after conceding. Clement found Lemoine on the left flank and his cutback found http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jean-Pascal-Mignot-c18216 whose effort went just wide of goal.
The Bretons started the second-half well and Stephane Ruffier was kept on his toes throughout the half. First it was Hadji who tested him from an acute angle and then it was http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Max-c24993 Gradel. However, Aubameyang made sure that his side went back to Rhone with
a point.
With the 1-1 draw, Rennais now play against Atletico Madrid in a Europa League clash this week. Frederic Antonetti would be hoping for his side to perform better than they did against  Saint-Etienne.
