Question:

Staffordshire Bull Terriers?

I was just wondering what some of your personal experiences have been with SBT's? How are they different from other dogs of the 'Pit Bull' type? How much exercise do they need? Can they get along with cats?

*I have co-owned a Rat Terrier before, so have had some experience with Terriers, but not full-time.

**Please note: I am not talking about American Pit Bull Terriers, or American Staffordshire Terriers. I am talking about Staffordshire Bull Terriers, a completely separate breed. http://www.nunostaffordshirebullterrier.nl/afbeeldingen/home/nuno%20staan.jpg

  1. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/staffordshir...

At one time they were the same breed !!!!!!!!!

    english bulldog / various terriers

they are all cousins now !!!!!!

Some are good w/ cats ... but probaly better if they both were babies .. and grow up w/ each other .... Alot of excercise... they are TERRIERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Staffies are one of my fave breeds, but there are a challenge. They need LOTS of training and you really need to be in control of them or they'll walk all over you. They also have insane amounts of energy, so don't get one of these unless you've got lots of time to spend with it!

Staffies tend not to be great with other dogs, but you can help this by taking them to puppy socialisation classes when young so they get experience with other dogs while they're at that pliable age. It'll also start you off with basic training.

As for cats - varies I think, depends on the individual and their experiences, and on the cat!

Think long and hard before getting this breed and do your research. Please also get one from a rescue centre rather than a breeder - shelters are full to bursting with staffies due to idiot people who get them on a whim and then can't handle them. No one has any business breeding staffies until this problem is under control.

  3. I haven't had any problems with my staffordshire bull terrier.

  4. I have a half Staffie and she is AMAZING.

They're a very dominant breed, so you have to establish your alpha leadership role right from the beginning.

They are dedicated dogs that work best with people and usually don't get along well with other dogs or animals to say the least, but with lots and lots of early socialization they can be excellent.

They are beautiful, loyal and powerful, and I would never get another breed. I hate how people stereotype any type of 'Bull terrier' breed as automatically being attack dogs. They're so wrong, because I've see Golden Retrievers and Labs act worse. In fact, my aunt's Lab goes after MY SBT mix, who is just looking to be friends.

    They're a great breed!

  5. as an owner of Pit bulls, Am Staffs and Staffords I can say they are all wonderful breeds.

NONE of my dogs like the cats and the Staffords grew up with them.

they are very simular to the other bully breeds but in a smaller package. They can have just as much pray drive and just as much dog aggressions.

  6. I'll just toss my 2 cents in and say that there is no guarantee with cats.  They are still terriers and some just plain don't get along with cats at all.  If you have cats, my suggestion would be to adopt a dog who is living in a foster home with cats so there are no surprises.
