Stage is set for women’s singles quarter-finals of the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold 2011
Stage is ready for the quarter-finals of women’s singles, as all matches in the round of 16 have been completed today in the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold 2011, at Basel, Switzerland. Among the seeded players are India’s Saina Nehwal, Germany’s Juliane Schenk,
Korea’s Youn Joo Bae and Bulgaria’s Petya Nedelcheva. The quarter-final matches of the women’s singles will be played in the evening today.
In the pre-quarterfinal match, the number two seed Saina got rid of Eriko Hirose of Japan, who crushed Judith Meulendijks of Netherlands in the second round. The Indian took 58 minutes of hard labour to chuck out the Japanese in a three-set battle with a
21-15, 17-21 and 21-11 margin.
In the quarter-final, Saina will meet the sixth seed Nedelcheva who emerged as the winner of round-of-16 match against Karin Schnaase of Germany. The Bulgarian spent only 34 minutes in the court to thrash the opponent in straight sets by a 21-11 and 21-12
margin.
The number three seed Juliane, who defeated Seung Hee Bae in the round-of-16, will take on another Korean shuttler, Moon Hi Kim, in the quarter-final showdown. Moon Kim delivered a tremendous performance against the number seven seed Jie Yao of the Netherlands
and took the three-set match 21-19, 16-21 and 21-15.
The fourth seed Youn Joo, who defeated Sayaka Sato of Japan in the second round, will be up against Landaweni Fanetri of Indonesia. The Indonesian got rid of Carolina Marin of Spain in the round-of-16, with a tight margin of 22-20 and 22-20, in 48 minutes.
There in only match in the women’s singles quarter-final stage that is going to be played between two un-seeded shuttlers. Korea’s Ji Hyun Sung will fight against Tzu Ying Tai of Chinese Taipei. Ji Sung remained lucky in the second round, where she escaped
from Adrianti Firdasari of Indonesia with a 16-21, 21-18 and 21-17 win.
If everything goes smoothly, Saina will have a semi-final clash against the fourth seed Youn Joo. From the upper-half of the draw, Juliane will meet either Ji Sung or Tzu Tai in the semi-finals of the tournament.
