  1. There are a few different computer-based lighting desks around; LightFactory, DasLight, Chamsys MagicQ, Horizon, but while you can download the software for free, you will have to buy a USB-DMX converter, a dongle or something similar so that your computer can talk to your dimmers.  If you're only wanting to control up to 48 channels, why not get something like a Zero88 Jester? Compact, very easy to use, has cue-stacking capability and is also fairly indestructible.

  2. The only one that I know of is the Horizon Software from Rosco. This software has been around for years and probably has been upgraded a few times since I used it in 2000 but I don't think it is free and you will need a converter box to make it compatible with your dimmers. However considering I wasn't exactly impressed with the performance of this device when I used it years ago it may not be around anymore.

After doing a little research on this subject I found a site with a few options. They are not free and since I have never used them I can't tell you which one would be the best as far as performance and durability is concerned, but I hope this link helps.
