Stage set for 15th edition of Slovenia International Championships at Medvode – Badminton News
The stage is ready for the 15th edition of the Slovenia International Championships to commence on Thursday, May 12, at Medvode, Slovenia.
It is the first time that the championship is taking place in the city of Medvode, where the European U17 Championships took place in 2009.
The Medvode Badminton Club will be assisting the Badminton Association of Slovenia, in organising this International event. A total number of 140 players from 24 countries will be participating in this event. The event will comprise on all categories including, Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
The Number One seed of the event is Kevin Gordon, who has won an international event in Peru. The Second seed of the championship, Hsu Jen Hao of Taiwan, has won the Men’s Singles title in the Austrian Open.
From the local shuttlers, Iztok Utrosa will be the hope for Slovenia. Iztok is the sixth seed in the event and is determined to put up a good show against his experienced opponents. He will open his campaign against Gergely Krausz. In the second round, he is expected to play against current national champion, Luka Petric.
In the Women’s Singles category, 38 participants will be contesting for the title. Top seed, Maja Tvrdy and Number Sixth seed, Spela Silvester will keeps the hopes of the local crowd alive. Simone Prutsch of Austria is the most prominent foreign opponent in the tournament.
In the Men’s Doubles category, top seeds Peter Kasbauer and Josche Zurwonne of Germany, are also 54th ranked in the world rankings. Second seeds in the Doubles category are Zvonimir Hoelbling and Zvonimir Durkinjak of Croatia.
In the Women’s Double category, Johanna Goliszewski and Carla Nelte of Germany are seeded at the top. They are the favourites to win the title as there is no considerable opponent in their way.
In Mixed Doubles, Agnieszka Wojtkowska and Wojciech Szkudlarczyk from Poland are the top seeds. The couple is currently ranked at the 43rd spot in the world rankings. Stasa Poznanovic and Zvonimir Durkinjak of Croatia go into the tournament as the second seeds, who are also occupying the 51st spot in the world rankings.
