Question:

Stages of Grappling (Submission wrestling, BJJ)

If you were to breakdown the Stages of grappling what would they be. As far as I could think I would say first the takedown then ??? then submissions. Its that middle part I can't describe, the setup possibly? Actually I say takedown, but some submissions are executed standing up. So maybe I should say Stage 1 is intializing Stage 2 is Setting up? Stage 3 finishing. Maybe more or less stages? The reason I ask is because im organizing all my youtube videos. Any help is greatly appreciated thanks.

  1. Take down, get your position, submission.

  2. Takedown, pass the guard, mount or take the back and submit. Of course there is always the possibility of catching a submission earlier but you should always be working for a better position. Also guard players do it differently. In that case its pull guard sweep then improve position till a submission. Royce Gracie shows a hierarchy of positions going from the worst position to the best. Here it is from worst to best:

    Opponent is on your back

    Opponent is mounted on you

    Opponent has side control

Opponent is on top in you half guard

    Opponent is in your guard

    You are in his guard

You are on top in his half guard

    You have side control

You are mounted on your opponent

    You have taken his back

  3. Interesting question - I guess you're wanting to categorize the videos so people can search or find things easier.  I would probably try to keep it as simple as possible for people.

Bridging the Gap (shooting, entry, hand fighting)

    Clinch & Setup Positions

    Throws & Takedowns

    Finishes - Standing and Ground

    Counters

I'm brand new to grappling, so this might not cover every category, but it seems like a simple way to organize and find things that you are looking for (for a novice like me).

  4. Closing the distance, Clinch, (what happens when clashing together or fighting for position in the clinch) Takedowns, self explanatory Transition (which is what you are thinking of, the movements in securing a position or submission), scrambing (what happens when a submission or positional change, or vying for position), positional dominance (getting into a position, and maintaining it) submission (self explanatory.

That is how i see it, hope that helps.

  5. takedown, position, submission
