  1. Oxyclean.

  2. There is a product called "Spot Shot" that comes in a 14 oz spray can... the can is orange and blue..it says instand carpet stain remover... I bought some and was amazed at how quickly it took a stain out of the carpet... it did not take out the color of the carpet...I bought mine at Walmart but am sure most stores would carry it... I found it to work very well... Hope this helps you...

  3. Old stains can be stubborn, which means it may be beyond you being able to just throw something down and wipe it up. Chances are whatever you choose it's gonna take some time and elbow grease.

Resolve has come out with a new 'High Traffic Foam' that you are supposed to be able to spray down, rub it a little then vacuum it up later once it drys. My mother has used this on more than one occasion and while it does do a decent job of getting the discoloration out, it seems to make the carpet feel crunchy or scratchy in patches for a while. Not to mention the cleaner can still be smelled if you are siting or lying on the floor even now months later.

A greener way would be to spot clean with baking soda and vinegar the reaction between the two does great things for stain removing as well as odor neutralizing. In this method work the stain with the baking soda and vinegar, once the stain is removed (or well enough) put some cool water on it and dab it up with a clean towel a couple times.

A final option would be to call Stanley Steamer. Or buy yourself a steam vacuum. All the great things you hear about the steam carpet cleaning are true. My sister has Stanley Steamer come once a year and afterward their carpets look like new. The downside to using a cleaning service is: 1)  You have to be present and should have moved any large furniture you want them to clean under beforehand (i.e. coffee table, sofa table, end tables etc.) because they won't and 2) It needs 12 to 24 hours to dry completely. The best thing is to plan an outing that will last the majority of the day, or have a neighbor or relative come and let them in and see them out. The best time to have them come is in the morning so the carpet has around 6 or 7 hours to rest and dry before the family gets home (assuming you have a 9-5 family). Turn on your ceiling fans and/or crack a few windows before you leave. It can be a little bit of a hassle but that is why you only do it once a year, and the result is so very worth it.
