Stairmand, Kymerson and Toledo emerge triumphant in Round 2 of Oakley Pro Ballito – Surfing news
New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand, Brazil’s Krystian Kymerson and his fellow countryperson Filipe Toledo secured their place in Round 3 (Round of 24) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Mr Price Pro Ballito after walking away with top honours
from their respective Round 2 (Round of 48) heats that went down at Ballito, South Africa, on Wednesday, July 3, 2013.
New Zealand’s Mason made the Round 3 cut as well after finishing behind Stairmand in second place during the 10th heat of Round 2. Australia’s Yadin Nicol and Tom Whittaker found themselves making a premature exit from the competition after rounding out
the bottom-two positions.
The 11th heat saw Brazil’s Jean Da Silva accompany Kymerson into the next round after clinching second place. Puerto Rico’s Brian Toth finished in third place, while Brazil’s Peterson Crisanto had to settle for fourth place. Both the surfers were consequently
eliminated from the event.
Australia’s Mitch Crews finished behind Toledo in second place during the 12thheat, thus advancing alongside the latter into the next round. Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro and France’s Marc Lacomare finished in third and fourth place respectively, thus getting
removed from the contention for the event title.
The head-high waves breaking at the primary event site during the afternoon session put the experience, skills and perseverance of surfers to test.
During the 10th heat, all four surfers struggled to find decent scores during the course of the battle. Stairmand, however, eventually managed to grab the win after registering a heat-total of 9.36 points.
Ho confirmed his place in the next round as well after finishing with a heat-total of 8.63 points, while Nicol and Whittaker got eliminated from the competition after registering a heat-total of 7.10 and 4.90 points respectively.
The 11th heat saw Kymerson claim victory over his rivals with a heat-total of 11.73 points, while Da Silva’s two-wave total of 11.24 points served to put him in second place.
Toth finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.40 points, whereas Crisanto had to settle for fourth place after registering a heat-total of 8.83 points.
Toledo, ASP World No.13, put on an outstanding performance during the final heat of Round 2. The Brazilian surfer landed a back-side air reverse on a left-hander to earn a 9.43 for the effort. Backing it up with a 7.43-point ride, he finished with an unbeatable
score of 16.86 points.
“Yeah that was the best heat I’ve had out here,” Toledo said. “The conditions were hard but I found a good left and the wind was really good for airs. When I landed it I thought that was a good score.”
Crews managed to extend his life in the event as well after registering a heat-total of 15.10 points, whereas Monteiro and Lacomare failed to go through into the next round after finishing with a heat-total of 13.16 and 11.20 points respectively.
