Question:

Stale/Stink smell from the tap water. Why?

Everytime I turn on the tap at my house at about an hours interval, and as the water falls into the bucket and pushes the air in the bucket upward, I get a stale smell from the water (directly smelling the water falling from the shower also smells the same). It happens only for about 30 seconds. After that the water doesn't have any smell. I've checked the water tank and there's no smell there. Earlier the smell used to be like as though it's some dead animal or fish. What could be the problem and any solutions to it?

  1. Are you on a well water system? if so..this is usually sulpher ,iron or other natural minerals in the water( my water is well and smells)..If you are not on well water I suggest turning the power off to the hot water heater(if electric) if gas shut the pilot light off..Then cut the water supply off..attach a water hose at the bottom of the hot water heater and run it outside where it can drain and not affect anything...then drain it good..after it is drained..leave the hose attached and turn on JUST THE WATER SUPPLY VALVE..and let it run and flush it out..water heaters after a few years accumilate suspended solids and minerals(even in city water supplies) and they settle on the bottom of the tank and eventually scorch a little from the water heating up constantly...Flush it out good and this should help
