Question:

Stalling Briggs & Stratton engine

I have a 2006 Yard Machines riding lawn mower model # 13B771G729
SN: 1C306B70480 502cc (17.5 hp Briggs & Strat engine, single cylinder), that out of the blue started to stall. The engine starts, but stalls as though about to quit then picks up revs again.

Initially, the problem seemed to subside if I engaged the blade. After a while though, it started the stalling while even with the blade engaged.

Most recently, I've stopped using it because the engine started to cough and backfire.

I have checked the fuel (clean, & fresh), removed the fuel line at the carb and it flows unobstructed through the inline filter. All electrical connections seem to be tight. Removed the spark plug and it appears to be burning clean.

Any ideas what the problem may be? Where can I get my hands on a shop manual for this particular riding lawn mower?

Any ideas, help or suggestions will be welcome. I'm stomped!
Thanks,

noel
