Stan Van Gundy is officially the Most Annoying Coach in the league
It is not common thing to see all the players in the league, agree on a single fact. However, when they were asked about who the most annoying coach in NBA is? The
reply was almost unanimous. Stan Van Gundy of course, there could not have been any other name. And so the “Most Annoying Coach” award goes to Stan Van Gundy, the head coach of Orlando Magic who does not mind ruffling a few feathers in expressing his piece
of mind. And it’s official now.
It so happened, that recently a sports related poll was held in which the players had to choose which coach was the most annoying of them all. 138 players currently
playing for the NBA participated in the poll. 90 per cent of the players voted for Van Gundy. The mandate of annoyance was so heavily won by him that Phil Jackson and Scott Skiles were left as mere crackers in front of Stan-the-dynamite. Jackson and Skiles
could only receive 7 per cent votes in the hunt for the most annoying coaches.
Stan is indeed one of the most outspoken coaches NBA has ever produced. Whether it is handling the players or officials, Stan has his own good ways. He is without
any doubt one of those people who are loud enough to be heard even from a distance and I am pretty sure his players, who sometimes seem oblivious when they are having conversation with the 51-year-old, have their ear buds intact.
Van Gundy’s favourite object of sarcacism off late has been Miami Heat, the very team he coached for two year before being shown the door by Pat Riley. Ever since,
the Big Three assembled at the south beach, Van Gundy has made it a point to fire regular salvos at his ex-franchise. He also has had some episodes with Shaquille O’ Neal.
The coach prompted O’Neal to call him a “Master of Panic” back in 2009, when they had a confrontation. The angry player even said that he understood why players who
played for Van Gundy didn’t like him.
Most recently, Stan made a mountain out of a mole hill, when NBA’s Commissioner David Stern gave Dwight Howard a one-game suspension, following his 16 technical fouls.
The angry coach went a bit too far and compared the commissioner to despots. He said, "This is the system David Stern and his minions like. So that's the system you have. ... I certainly can't have an opinion because David Stern, like a lot of leaders we've
seen in this world lately, don't really tolerate other people's opinion or free speech or anything. So I'm not really allowed to have an opinion. So it's up to him."
Stern however responded in the most surprising manner, keeping himself as calm as possible. He said that he would not fine the coach this time, like he did back in
January. The commissioner said that the coach is undergoing a tough time and his team is not playing well that’s why he will leave the matter on the owners of Orlando Magic. He also added that Stan will realize his mistake as soon as he goes back and reads
about what he said.
