Question:

Stand By Generator installation.?

We're getting a stand by generator installed and the contractor wanted one half of his money up front. Is that customary? Should we offer him a smaller percentage down and if so, what is appropriate?

Also, the electrician said that we would have to get the pad installed separately. Is that standard in this kind of thing? How much should we budget for a pad? Is it something I can do myself? Also, can crushed rock be used instead of concrete?

  1. It depends on how heavy the generator is.  There are one piece 'pads' you can buy, and put on top of crushed rock.

The normal pay for any work is 1/3 down, 1/3 mid-way, 1/3 after satisfactory completion of work.

You don't want to pay an electrician to put in the base.

Make sure permits are pulled prior to the job,  I would also talk to your fire marshal, and show him where you want to place it.   If he has a problem with it, he won't sign-off on the fuel connection.   He could make you move it, and that would suck!

  2. that is customary around here anyways. An electrician and i installed one 2 months ago.the 50% is probably just to cover the unit.weve been doing bussiness with our supplier for years and thats something they dont like financing for long.

I would put it on a pad,and thats not hard to do,a couple stakes an 2x6s,and  concrete.the info with the unit will give specs for that. crushed rock yes but under the pad

  3. If they have a boss you should speak with them and know the law.

Money talks so..It can work for you or against you.
