Question:

Standard Definition Signals on a High Definition TV?

I'm in the market for a HDTV (for gaming), but still have standard cable and won't be upgrading to digital or HD Cable or Satellite. If I purchase a HDTV, what should I look for to ensure that the SD signal still looks "normal" on the HDTV? Do I look for the standard definition tuner and Coaxial Input? Do I look for a HDTV that also specifies that it can display 480(i)(p) in addition to the HD Quality? Is there anything else that might help out?

  1. Hello!

I am afraid there is nothing special to look for other than perhaps a review of a HDTV which displays standard definition content well.

No HDTV will display a 480 signal natively, what I mean is it will always upscale the signal to it's native resolution, which is going to be either 1920x1080 or 1280x720.

As a result the picture may not be great but as I said earlier, search for a set which does a good job upscaling and it should do you fine. All sets will handle standard definition though if thats your worry.
