What would a traditional japanese breakfast include. I am allergic to gluten and eggs (and its become a bigger problem recently); so I'm looking to switch to the traditional japanese diet as it lacks those allergens.

  1. miso soup with tofu

    steamed rice

    pickled cucumbers

  2. Rice, scrambled eggs, pickled cucumbers (but not like western pickles...japanese pickles are long and thin and flimsy and packed in salt)

  3. Kinda like asking what a standard American breakfast includes.  Anyway...

Whenever possible all Japanese meals come with steamed rice.  Most regions also include pickled vegetables (cucumber, radish, eggplant, burdock root, etc.) and miso soup.  One of my favorites is fresh tofu with radish sprouts and soy sauce on top.  Broiled fish and sweet omelettes are also regular menu items.

  4. When I was a chef there I used to stop and have a traditional one every so often, everyone is right, rice is a staple even a breakfast, I like the stinky fermented natto and skipped the raw egg , pickled, sometime a fish item or a meat item, depend on the place, green tea .

You may have to settle for the younger generations type, sweet buns, some place make crossiants, American style cereals, and toast, but there breads are heavier and eggy so that is out for you, rice cereal like Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes are available, find a chinese place and have a bowl of steaming hot congee, a rice porridge, it is a good way to start the morning.

  5. breads, onigiti (rice wraped in seaweed) and soba soup :)

    Yummy!!
