Standard new york style window needs to be repaired?

i have in my apt the classic window with up-down movement,as you can find in 99% fo the new york apartment, but now it cannnot stay open i can open it only a 10%..maybe something is broken inside... do you think im able to repair it buying some stuff? any elemnts inside to be replaced and i can biuy in the hardware store?

The window you are talking about sounds like it has a counterweight in it. You'll have to be handy to fix it.

First you will need to see if it has one or two. Go to This Old House web site and Tom Silva did one not too long ago.

Sounds like the "sash" is no good and has to be replaced.  That's what the window slides up and down on (on each side of the window -- kind of like a track).  Can't buy that in a hardware store.  Have to have someone replace it probably.  By the way, I'm guessing you just rent the apartment?  The landlord should be responsible for fixing that, not you.  It's not an easy or simple job to do.
