i called the automated number listed on my standby ticket for my flight in 5 days, and all of the flights availability status were listed as "bad"

should i just not go at all, or is it common for them to be listed as "bad" and a person still get a seat once you're on the waiting list?

  1. You should still try. Airlines usually close out the weight list so the flight does not get overbooked. Besides someone may not show up for the flight or be delayed and not make. You will get their seat.

  2. It's definitely worth a try unless there is something going on (e.g. a big convention, sports event, whatever) that would mean that a whole bunch of people have the same idea.  If possible try to get on the standby list NOW as it's generally first-come-first-served.

  3. one thing I can guarantee:  if you don't try, you won't get on!

All kinds of stuff can happen:  if a group misconnects onto the flight you're trying for, seats will open up....if pax booked on your flight show up at the airport earlier and go on earlier flight, seats will open up...

If it's an option, maybe go for the first flight of the day.  If it's at some awful time like 6am, maybe some paid pax will oversleep...

but if you want to feel more secure, reschedule your trip!

  4. go ahead and try, air lines often over book because they know that not everyone will fly (ticket changes ext) if you book a ticket and the flight is full they will put you on the next available flight with empty seats, without charge unless you up grade your ticket to first class to take that flight. if you have the time to wait at the airport then go ahead and book you may or may not have to wait around.
