Question:

Standing during pregnancy for long periods of time?

I'm 28weeks pregnant and i'm a nurse and some days busier than others. The last couple of days it has been crazy at work (not sitting once within four hours at a time...no exaggeration). I've been really sore in my vaginal area (feels like a muscle ache). Is this normal or should it be something i'm concerned about? I'm assuming its just the pressure of everything coming down when I'm standing is this correct? I work on a cardiac unit, so I know nothing about this type of stuff lol.

  1. You need to sit down once every two hours even just for ten minutes or so if you can. I understand you may be busy but remember your baby is first!

  2. oh i had the very same problem it is called SPD (symphisis pubis dysfunction) it has nothing to do with your posture or anything you are doing wrong it is a hormone called oxytocin that releases in your body this hormone induces your labour but what happens with SPD this hormone re;eases too suddenly and makes the pubic bone softer and this makes the pubic bone seperate further in preparation for birth. it feels like your v****a is aching and tired and at times it can become excruiating. you may have to give up work if this is the case but you can mention this to the physio at your hospital and mention your symptoms and the SPD and ask for a support belt which is used around your hips to try stop preventing your pelvis seperating further. in the late stages of pregnancy i ended up in a wheelchair unable to walk as a result of it. but when my son was born it disappeared immediately. you need to rest as much as possible. but whn you go into have your baby dont forget to tell the midwives that you may have SPD as there are certain precautions and measures they have to put in place. do go to your physio as this problem is so under diagnosed in pregnant women and passed off as something else and can lead to major problems. you may even need to have a c-section if it gets to bad so do go see your doc asap. hope this helps

  3. I don't know for sure, but I can tell u I feel the same thing when i stand too long at work. I'm 24 weeks pregnant.

  4. It's normal....but that doesn't make it any easier to bear.  I am 37 weeks along and the pain in my pubic symphysis/lower back has gotten steadily worse.  I can barely walk now because it hurts so much.  Walking/standing greatly exacerbates it.

I'm afraid that your pain will get worse as your pregnancy progresses, and then you will either need to sit a lot more at your job, or cut down your hours.  I know you probably don't want to, but trust me, the pain will drive you to it.  I'm still working full time, but I do much more sitting than I used to, and I don't walk if I don't have to.
