Stanford Cardinal claim home victory, 3-0 – Volleyball news
The Stanford University hosted a thrilling match on Friday, which brought the 49ers of Long Beach State University in competition with the home squad.
The Cardinal displayed incredible action of volleyball and settled for victory in just three sets. The hosts sent 25-13, 25-16, and 25-18 to claim victory over the opponent. The packed up Maples Pavilion provided the backdrop for the Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation regular-season match.
With another great win, Stanford Cardinal jumped to 17-6 win/loss record in the season. Moreover, the team improved to 14-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sport Federation. The Long Beach State was pushed to 13-13 overall and 8-11 MPSF record after Friday’s sweep.
The Stanford team was hugely supported by duo of Brian Cook and Brad Lawson, who were simply amazing in the match. Both of them put up a valiant effort and registered 14 kills each.
The opening phase of the match featured a balanced action and both teams stayed close on the scoreboard. Colten Echave of 49ers paced things off with a convincing ace and put his team in lead at 4-3.
However, the Cardinal attackers responded in the same fashion. They quickly scored a couple of points and went on front with 6-1. Now the competition sort of heated up and both teams hit with great accuracy and precision.
Meanwhile, Cardinal managed to stretch the gap of points. The 49ers trailed behind but did not lose hope. They continued with their efforts to catch up with the Cardinal. The visiting team was at fair distance from the hosts before Stanford rallied a 12-3
run and closed first set at 25-13.
Stanford kicked off the next set with confident shots and successfully dragged the 49ers under pressure. The opponents could not resist and lost the second set of the match, 16-25. Stanford was totally shaped up to finish the game in third set and nothing
could hold them back. The home team posted 25-18 on board and claimed 3-0 victory.
Stanford coach John Kosty shared his views after the match. He stated, “We need to take care of business every day. How the cards lay out … well … we dealt our own hand. We just need to take care of ourselves and see where we end up.”
Meanwhile, the libero of Stanford, Erik Shoji said, “We’re all looking for a Santa Barbara-type run from last year. We know we’re capable for anyone to come out play well and beat any team, so we’re trying to do that every night as we point toward the playoffs.”
The Stanford team is back in action on Saturday, April 7, when the Cardinal takes on the Hawaiian team at same Maples Pavilion. Likewise, the 49ers of LBSU are scheduled to travel to Stockton for a MPSF match against No. 13 Pacific Tigers.
