Stanford University men’s volleyball team loses to Long Beach State by 3-2 on Saturday
The Stanford University men’s volleyball team did not have a Saturday that they were looking forward to as they could not emerge as victors in the quarterfinal of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament match.
Not only that, the Cardinals suffered a defeat while playing in their home ground. The number four ranked Cardinal team was bettered by the number five ranking Long Beach State in a match that went on for five long and gruelling sets.
By the time that LBSU was celebrating their well-earned win in the home ground of their rivals, and the host team was heading out of the court with heads lowered in disappointment, the scoreboard summarised the match by displaying the final set scores that
signalled a LBSU win at 3-2.
With their recent loss, Stanford has now suffered losses in the overall season that amount to be nine in all. The number of times that the Cardinals have been able to register wins in this season so far total to be 19. In contrast to this, the Cardinals
have had 18 victories in the MPSF. The numbers of their defeats now tally at eight.
As opposed to the overall record as well as the MPSF record of the Cardinals, the performance statistics of LBSU do not stand so bright. The amount of times that LBSU has been able to earn themselves a win in the overall season so far total to be 15.
On the other hand, the amounts of times that they have incurred losses are not so low either at 13. If the MPSF statistics of LBSU is considered, then their wins total to be 12. They have registered these victories at the expense of undergoing 10 losses
so far.
The start of the first set of the match saw both the teams go almost neck to neck with each point. However, as the matched reached the middle stages, Stanford was able to push past and take the lead for themselves at 15-12. The Cardinals were not able to
sustain the momentum that they built as LBSU charged on ahead to take the lead for themselves at 18-17. Despite the fact that final stages of the set got tough, the 49ers were still able to pull off a win by bagging the opening set of the game at 26-24.
Even though they had lost the first set of the game, the Cardinals started off the second with renewed energy. They were able to put pressure on the 49ers by taking the lead. However, LBSU did not let the Cardinals relax and pushed ahead with a lead of their
own. A tug of war ensued between the two teams and the match reached a tie at 17-17. This time around, the Cardinals were able to seal the deal by winning the second set of the game.
After two gruelling third and fourth sets, the Cardinals brought the game to a fifth one. However, LBSU proved to be the better of the two as they took the final set for their own.
Stanford might still have a chance in the MPSF if the selection committee decides to give the one at large bid to the Cardinals.
