Stanislas Wawrinka: A look at his performances this year
Born on 28 March 1985 in the city of Lausanne, Stanislas Wawrinka is a professional tennis player from Switzerland. The twenty five year old Stanislas achieved his career high rankings of world number nine by the Association of tennis professionals back in 2008 during the month of June.
The Swiss considers clay court as his favourite surface and his backhand as his greatest shot. Stanislas captured a gold medal for his country in the men's doubles event at the 2008 Summer Olympics held in Beijing, along with his partner Roger Federer after defeating Swedish side Thomas Johansson/Simon Aspelin in the final round. Being a “golden side FedRinka" they were also granted Swiss Team of the Year Award two years ago back in 2008.
John McEnroe believes that Stanislas has one of the strongest backhands he has ever experienced in the game of tennis and explains him as possessing the best single handed backhand in the present day.
Stanislas started playing the game of tennis at fourteen years of age and entered the satellite circuit the next year. He registered his name as an outstanding junior player, capturing the French Open junior title back in 2003 and ending the season as number fourteen in the world.
The Swiss tennis player, turned professional back in 2002 at seventeen years of age. He could not reach the top fifty rankings in the world until 2005. Stanislas has a 2–3 career Davis Cup singles record in a total of three ties. The right handed was coached by Dimitri Zavialoff from age eight till June 2010.
As far as this year is concerned, Stanislas started the season by making his way into the finals of the Chennai Open tennis tournament where he lost to Marin Cilic in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-7 6-7. The defeat came as Wawrinka's fifth in a row in an ATP final match.
At the Australian Open tennis tournament 2010, the Saint Barthelemy resident, could not pass the third round of the competition, facing defeat at the hands of Cilic once again in straight sets. Stan next played at the Sony Ericsson Open, where he thrashed out Kevin Anderson before falling down to Mikhail Youzhny in the third round of the competition.
Stanislas started his clay court season by playing at the 2010 Grand Prix Hassan II where he defeated Martin Klizan, Reda El Amrani, Potito Starace as well as Victor Hanescu to reach the his second ATP final of the career. In the final battle, the Swiss managed to win the title after a three hours clash in straight sets.
Seeded thirteen at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters tennis tournament, Wawrinka got the better of Victor Hanescu in the first round of the competition in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-2 6-4. He then defeated Latvian Ernests Gulbis to reach the third round of the competition in a two setter clash. In the third round, Stanislas was dismissed by his Serbian tennis foe, Novak Djokovic in a total of two sets. The final match score was 4-6 4-6.
The right handed Wawrinka then continued his winning form and made his way into the quarterfinals in Rome, falling down to Rafael Nadal in two sets and in Belgrade losing to his American tennis foe, John Isner in a total of two sets. The final match score was 5-7 5-7.
At the French Open tennis tournament, Stanislas Wawrinka was seeded number 20 to win the title. He made his way into the fourth round without even missing a single set however was beaten by Roger Federer in a total of three sets in the end. The final match score was 6-3 7-6 6-2.
As far as the ongoing U.S Open 2010 is concerned, the Swiss tennis player, Stanislas Wawrinka has so far managed to reach the fifth round of the competition for a semifinal berth with Mikhail Youzhny after getting the better of Sam Querrey in the fourth round.
