Stanislas Wawrinka battles past Donald Young into third round – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011
In an enthralling second round battle at the Shanghai Rolex Masters, the Swiss number two, Stanislas Wawrinka edged past Donald Young of the United States, on Tuesday afternoon.
Being played on the outdoor hard courts of the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai, People's Republic of China, the local crowd witnessed brilliant power hitting of the world number 19, who drove Young out of the competition in style,
Wawrinka wrapped up victory in three sets, 6-7(5), 7-6(2), 6-2, after a two hour and twenty five minute battle with the 22-year-old American, booking a berth in the third round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series tournament.
It was an exciting game of tennis, with a number of major momentum swings been seen throughout the course of the match. Wawrinka appeared sloppy in the earlier parts of the game but gathered up his pace later on to race past his opponent to victory. He dropped the opening set in a tie breaker round but made his way back in business after pocketing the following set. Once getting into his winning groove, the 13th seed Wawrinka never turned back in the final set and blew away Young to conclude victory.
The Swiss avenged his defeat from Young, who stunned Wawrinka in the five-setter, 7-6(7), 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(1), in the second round of the US Open earlier this season. It was Wawrinka’s 32nd victory of the running year, with 16 defeats to his name already.
It was an evenly poised contest, with both men throwing out their best at each other. Young clinched 39 out of 71 first serve points in the matchup but Wawrinka bettered him with 48 points. The agile American took the upper hand in the contest by winning the opening round tie breaker but dropped his momentum in the very next set to let Wawrinka back in the game. The Swiss carried on with his belligerence in the final set and nailed two break points to close out victory at 6-2.
Wawrinka will either compete against the world number four, Andy Murray of the Great Britain, or the unseeded Russian, Grigor Dimitrov, in his next matchup to fight for a quarter-final berth at the Shanghai Rolex Masters. Murray and Dimitrov will compete in the second round match on Wednesday night and the winner of the contest will meet the 13th seeded Swiss in third round.
