Stanislas Wawrinka beats Victor Hanescu in Copa Claro
The Swiss number two, Stanislas Wawrinka, won his second round match against Victor Hanescu of Romania at the Copa Claro event on Tuesday. Wawrinka defeated his opponent after a two hour forty seven minute marathon contest in Buenos Aires to qualify for
the quarter-finals, with the final score settling at 6-7, 6-1 and 7-6.
The three-set thriller featured a great game of pro tennis with two sets being decided by a tie- breaker. Both players are equally matched and strained very hard to come out as the winner. The momentum of the game kept going back and forth throughout the
contest, as it was difficult to predict who would grab victory.
The Swiss was a bit sloppy in the beginning of the contest, but gather up pace later on. Both contestants had a service break and kept the scores level. A tie-breaker was enforced to decide the opening set. Hanescu displayed his sublime touch to take the
early control of the set with a couple of cracking winners down the line. He allowed very little to his opponent and extended his lead in the tie-breaker. Wawrinka managed to score two points in the decider, as the Romanian nabbed the first set 7-6.
The second set of the match was completely dominated by the Swiss, who looked a totally different player by then. His agility was remarkable and his anticipation was very accurate. Hanescu assisted his opponent by spoiling some winning chances and committing
plenty of unforced errors. Wawrinka cracked two service breaks right from the start of the set and never allowed the Romanian to bounce back in the game. The Swiss displayed magnificent error-free tennis to overwhelm his opponent, as he took the second set
comprehensively at 6-1 to level the match at a set apiece.
The decisive set of the match was the most exciting and dramatic of all. Both men fought very hard throughout the set and kept the contest evenly poised. The players posted identical numbers in the set, as they won 30 serve points and 13 returns point each.
Each player had good chances to get ahead in the match and take the lead. Hanescu squandered a back-hand stroke which could have resulted in a match point for him at 5-4. Wawrinka got his chance to come on top at 5-5, but the Romanian fought hard to deny
him the break-point. The third set finally had to enter another tie-breaker to decide the winner of the match. Wawrinka proved to be the better man, as he managed to grab the third set break and win the decider 7-6.
Wawrinka will be squaring off against the Argentinian Juan Monaco, in the quarter-final this week. Monaco defeated his countryman Eduardo Schwank in a comprehensive straight set victory to reach the quarter-final. It will be exciting to see how he manages
to play against Wawrinka in this evenly matched game.
