Stanislas Wawrinka commits for the Aircel Chennai Open 2013 – Tennis News
Swiss star, Stanislas Wawrinka, is returning for the Aircel Chennai Open for the fifth time. He is bidding for a winning start like when he did in 2011 at this ATP World Tour 250 Series event taking place in Chennai, India.
Last year’s quarter-finalist, Wawrinka is eyeing to make a winning start at this outdoor hard court tournament taking place in the first week of January. He has enjoyed great success on the SDAT Tennis Stadium where he captured a title two years ago. Wawrinka
was also runner-up in 2010 and has bagged the doubles title at this event in three years ago.
Currently ranked 17th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Wawrinka has had a great campaign in 2012. He made a sloppy start to the year but found his rhythm after that. The Swiss secured semi-final berths in Buenos Aires, Acapulco,
Estoril and Cincinnati.
Joining Wawrinka is the Croatian number one, Marin Cilic, at this Australian Open warm-up tournament.
The Ceo of Tamil Nadu Tennis Association, Hiten Joshi, reflected about their participation, "It is a privilege to have Marin Cilic back for the 2013 edition. Also it will be good to see Wawrinka back in action this year. The crowds in Chennai love and support
them as if they were local boys!"
The world number 15 was forced to miss the tournament with patella injury. However, Cilic achieved great success on tour after recovering. The Croat has conquered this event in 2009 and 2010. He stated in a press conference, “I am delighted to be back in
Chennai, especially since I could not participate in last year's event due to an injury. I have chosen to start my five previous seasons here and have had great success as a lead up to the Australian Open. It is always a pleasure to play in Chennai, a city
that has grown to become a home away from home for me."
Two of the Top 10 players are leading the Aircel Chennai Open. Czech top ranked star Tomas Berdych and Serbian number two Janko Tipsarevic will be the top two seeds at this event.
