Stanislas Wawrinka crashes out against Simone Bolelli in second round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Fourteenth seeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka was dumped out by lucky loser, Italian Simone Bolelli from Wimbledon Championships 2011, third of the fourth Grand Slam event held in London, U.K. He trailed in two tie-breakers to register
a 6-7(5), 3-6, 6-7(4) defeat to exit from the second round on Wednesday.
A former top ten, Wawrinka reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2008 and 2009 but showed dismal performance this year to not even equal his best record here. Despite playing well in the first and third set, he failed to prevail
in the tie-breakers to eventually exit from the second round at SW 19.
Bolelli, ranked 116th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, on the other hand won for the first time against Wawrinka in their third meeting. Bolelli lost to Swiss two times in 2008 but after sweeping
Wawrinka in this event, he not only took revenge but also lowered the trail in their head-to-head series by 1-2.
World number fourteen, Swiss put up a solid show of tennis abilities in the opening set as he converted one out of three breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to take the lead. However, he was able to save only two out of three
breakpoints faced and took the set to a tie-breaker. Wawrinka was outplayed in it and eventually lost the opener with a 6-7(5) defeat.
The Swiss further derailed into the second set as he lost his serve twice and committed more double faults. He tried to rekindle his spark by converting one out of four breakpoint chances to his advantage but Wawrinka saved only
two out of four breakpoints conceded and eventually lost the set with a 3-6 score line.
The Lausanne born star, Wawrinka fought back hard in the final set. He founded eight breakpoint opportunities and converted one to his advantage. However, Wawrinka didn’t capitalise on the thirteen unforced errors Bolelli committed
and failed to save the only breakpoint faced to extend the set to a tie-breaker. He pushed the set to one hour but only saw him trailing in the tie-breaker to lose the final set with a 6-7(4) defeat.
Overall, Wawrinka produced a lower first serve share of 60 percent as compared to Italian’s 67 percent but registered a spectacular 79 percent win on it. He converted three out of fifteen breakpoint opportunities to his advantage
but it wasn’t enough to overpower Bolelli.
The Italian will go on to face French Richard Gasquet in the next round.
