Stanislas Wawrinka downs Peter Luczak to reach the quarter-finals – Suisse Open Gstaad 2011
An excellent start for the world number 17, Stanislas Wawrinka, as he won his matchup against the Australian qualifier, Peter Luczak, in the second round of Credit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad on Thursday afternoon.
Being part of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 clay-court swing, the competition was staged at the Credit Agricole Arena in Gstaad, Switzerland, with the second seeded home favourite winning the contest
in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. Luczak hung in the matchup for just one hour and twenty three minutes before Wawrinka flew away victory to book a berth in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
It appeared to be a one-sided contest throughout, with the Swiss number two, Wawrinka, dominating with his accurate power game. Although his serve precision was below par, reaching just 47 per cent in the matchup, Wawrinka was
extremely effective with winning crucial points on regularity to remain on top of the game.
Second seeded Swiss had no real difficulty in cruising through the opening set with ease but the Aussie opponent posed some resistance in the following set to let Wawrinka work a bit harder to earn victory. The Swiss fired nine
aces in the matchup, along with four double faults and magnificently secured 22 out of 27 first serve points en route to victory.
The opening set took off with cautious tennis being played by the two contestants, ticking the score board on even terms. A regular game took the scores to 4-3 when the second seeded Swiss made his first move to register a serve
break to serve for the set at 5-3. The first set fell to Wawrinka’s name at 6-3 but the Australian finally registered his first serve break of the day in the following set, to lead 4-1. Luczak appeared in a belligerent form and it looked for a while that the
Aussie will take the second set to level the contest.
An amazing turnaround was seen in the set, with Wawrinka nailing two serve breaks to rocket away to victory in the last moments of the game at 7-5 to get into the quarter-finals of the tournament. Wawrinka defeated Luczak for the
first time in 2006 Davis Cup edition, outplaying him 6-4, 6-2, 6-7(7), 6-2, in singles encounter. His Thursday’s victory over the Australian extended his overall head-to-head lead by 2-0 against Luczak.
Up next for Wawrinka in the quarter-finals is the eighth seeded Spaniard, Marcel Granollers, who defeated Igor Andreev of Russia to reach the round of eight.
