Stanislas Wawrinka eases past Ivan Dodig into second round – Davidoff Swiss Indoors 2011
A local super star Stanislas Wawrinka pleased the home crowd after dumping Croatia’s Ivan Dodig in straight sets at the Davidoff Swiss Indoors 2011, an ATP World Tour 500 series event taking place at St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland.
He registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the Bosnia-born Dodig to reach the second round on Tuesday.
After almost one and half hour long marathon, the world number nineteen Wawrinka put triumph over the Croat, ranked sixteen levels below him in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, after putting up a solid display
of tennis. Meeting for the first time, Wawrinka not only took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against Dodig but also secured a second round spot.
The Swiss thundered into the indoor hard courts of this tournament and got the desiderated break in the opening game. He then held remaining serves to clinch the opener with a 6-4 score line. Wawrinka clobbered a much better first
serve share of 68 percent as compared to Dodig’s 41 percent and registered a spectacular 84 percent win on it. In addition to this, the highly positive Wawrinka warded off the only breakpoint faced and cashed in the only breakpoint opportunity to his advantage.
26-year-old local hero carried his winning ways in the final set and after pinging the balls expertly onto the lines, he bagged in entire serves. He then edged over the Croat by breaking his serve once in the ninth game. Wawrinka
faced zero breakpoint and capitalised on one out of three breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to seal the victory with a 6-4 win again.
Overall, the Swiss star smashed six aces and capitalised fully on the several unforced errors the Croat coughed. Furthermore, his return point share of 36 percent is much convincing than Dodig’s 19 percent.
Next up for the Swiss is the winner of the match between second seeded British Andy Murray and Dutch number one Robin Haase.
Wawrinka’s will join his compatriot Roger Federer, a former world number one, in the second round.
30-year-old Federer, seeded third in this event, took eighty-eight minutes to trash Italian Potito Starace in straight sets. He saved the only breakpoint came across and converted one out of three breakpoint opportunities to his
advantage to seal the deal with a 7-6(3), 6-4 score line. The Swiss also manipulated a slightly higher first serve share of 66 percent as compared to Italian’s 62 percent and earned a superb 88 percent win on it.
