Stanislas Wawrinka knocks out Michael Russell in 2nd round – Rogers Cup 2011
The 3rd round seats of the Rogers Cup 2011, An ATP Masters 1000 event, filled up as Stanislas Wawrinka, Swiss World No.17, emerged victorious after his 2nd round match against Michael Russell, the American
world No.100. Head on for the second time, the Swiss took out his former opponent once again winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. The fixture was played at the Stade Uniprix Centre hard court, Montreal on Wednesday, 10th August.
Playing previously at the Chennai Open, Wawrinka gave a similar beating to the American and surprisingly in the same round, 2nd. The fact of the matter is that the American has certainly grown old. His desperation to
achieve a last stand in the spotlight might never be accomplished but when there is a will there is a way.
The successor of the match, Wawrinka, played an amazing knock. His defence was as strong as concrete. With a first serve win percentage of 81 percent, the Swiss had his control in the game from the start. His consistency led him
to end the match in just one hour and twelve minutes, wining him a 3rd round seat.
Commencing toward the start, Wawrinka served first to open the match and rolled the scorecard, 1-0. Levelling the scores in game 2, Russell once again stood to play the Swiss. The scores once again equalled at 2-2 with Wawrinka
to serve in the next game.
Saving a crucial breakpoint, the Swiss broke the American on his serve in the game 6 of the set to lead 4-2. Extending his lead further on, the 26-year-old crumbled the 33-year-old American in the first set, defeating him 6-3 and
took the match lead, 1-0.
Wawrinka displayed perfection in the second set start when he broke the 33-year-old American in the opening game of the set. Extending to a 2-0 lead, the Swiss switched the service to his rival. Breaking his opponent once again,
the Swiss revved up to 3-1.
Russell pulled up another game to cut the lead to 2-3 in game 5 but that was the last he could roll back. The world No.17 mustered game 6 leading 4-2 and for the third time in the set, broke his opponent into pieces leading 5-2.
The eventual destroyer came in the final game as Wawrinka bagged the set 6-2 and the match 6-3, 6-2, crumbling the American oldster in straight sets. The overpowered American took his walk back to the locker room while the 26-year-old
Swiss took his seat against Kevin Anderson, South African, in the 3rd round of Rogers Cup 2011.
