Stanislas Wawrinka overwhelms Florian Mayer in quarterfinal – Swiss Indoors Basel 2011
Swiss number two, Stanislas Wawrinka, faced on real challenge in disposing of the 22nd ranked German opponent, Florian Mayer, in the quarter-final of the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel on Friday evening.
Rated at number 19 in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, Wawrinka exhibited a magnificent display of sheer dominance over the unseeded German in the contest. He wrapped up victory in straight sets, 6-2,
6-2, to dump Mayer from the competition in the most authoritative fashion.
The 26-year-old Swiss took merely 64 minutes to book himself a place in the semi-final round of the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in style. Wawrinka beat his German opponent in every segment of the game and gave him absolutely
no chance to come on top. Mayer bagged his first ever ATP championship title last month but utterly failed to put up a decent performance in Friday’s contest. His error-ridden game play proved too taxing for him in the end, letting an easy pass to the Swiss
competitor to reach the final four of the tournament.
“I was expecting a very tough match against Florian, he’s a very good player, but I think today I played my best match of the week,” said Wawrinka, who now leads 2-0 against Mayer in singles encounters. “I played really good, really
aggressive; everything was good. To reach the semi-final here in Basel is very important for me, especially at the end of the season.”
Despite of a below par serve precision of merely 39 per cent, Wawrinka dropped just one point his first serve, clinching 15 out of 16, to drive his opponent out of the competition. He converted four out of nine break opportunities
in the matchup, with Mayer badly failing to craft even a single break chance in the entire contest to finish on the losing side in the end. Wawrinka kept the rallies short and professional to cruise through both sets with the utmost ease, advancing in to the
round of four of the tournament.
A huge challenge waits Wawrinka in the semi-final round, as he meets the world number four, the Swiss maestro, Roger Federer, for a place in the final of the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel on Saturday. The defending champion booked
a date with Wawrinka in the semis after taking down the former world number one, Andy Roddick of the United States, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of eight on Friday night.
