Stanislas Wawrinka prepares for the next Chennai Open 2013 – Tennis News
Ranked 17th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Stanislas Wawrinka, is among the top-list contestants for the next ATP Aircel Chennai Open held in Australia at the start of 2013. He will contest for
his fifth title at the Chennai Open next season and is aiming to accumulate sufficient points to improve his world rankings.
The Swiss contender has been one of the brightest rising stars on the ATP World Tour but inconsistent performances, coupled with niggling injuries, have taken a huge toll out of him in the recent few years. However, he is very
determined to register a breakthrough season next year and Chennai Open will provide a decent practice ground for him to warm up for the Australian open Grand slam tournament. He is the only notable player from Switzerland after the legendary Roger Federer
and he is the one who shall carry on the legacy of sport in his country.
The former Olympics doubles gold medallist, Wawrinka, struggled hard and contested until the third round of the Australian Open held at the Melbourne Park this year. He received a three-set defeat at the hands of the higher ranked
Spanish challenger, Nicolas Almagro.
He made it to the semi-finals of both the Copa Claro and Abierto Mexicano Telcel tournaments. At the Monte Carlo Rolex Maters, he managed to battle until the quarter-finals but in the end, he was unable to rally beyond the king
of clay, Rafael Nadal.
Right-hander Wawrinka performed relatively better at the French Open and after a tough five-set match, he bagged home a disappointing end against the Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He was unable to perform up to the mark on the
grass courts of All-England Club, suffering an early exit.
The 27-year-old certainly intends to construct a strong tennis campaign for next year. The upcoming tournament at Chennai Open will tune him for the next Australian Open Grand Slam and strengthen him for all the over powering odds
in the upcoming season.
